Gotland Sheep
Gotland sheep are known for their incredible fleece and pelts.
Gotland sheep, with their rich history, were established on the Swedish island of Gotland during the Viking era, adding a cultural and historical significance to their breed.
Since 2003, a successful breeding program has been actively introducing and establishing the delightful Gotland breed of sheep in North America. The breed’s popularity is driven not only by its exceptional fleece and pelt but also by its docile and friendly disposition, and its undeniable charm.
The Gotland fleece is renowned for its unique qualities, characterized by being fine, lustrous, and dense, and it can be found in all shades of silver to charcoal gray. The fleece boasts a clearly defined, even curl and staple that is soft to the touch. Typically, the fleece measures 29 to 34 microns in diameter, while lambs’ wool can be in the low to mid 20 microns range. Handspinners and felters in the US highly value the fleece, while in Europe, it is more coveted for its pelts.
